Physical Exams And Sports Physicals

Practicing physical activity is an easy way to keep people healthy. In children, sport allows them to stay fit, drain their excessive daily energy, and helps develop discipline and perseverance. It also makes them healthier.

It is no secret that practicing a sport not only brings us back to life and improves our day-to-day life, but it is also an opportunity to make new friends wherever we are. Exercising brings us many benefits.

So why do kids need sport physicals? Children, just like adults, can suffer injuries or damage while practicing a sport, so before the start of each sports season, it is necessary to go to a specialized pediatrician who can do a checkup on the child’s physical condition.

What Is Done During A Physical?

The examination done before the start of any sports activity is called a pre-sports physical, which consists of a thorough physical examination, especially cardiovascular, pulmonary and musculoskeletal, and a clinical evaluation based on the child’s history.

The goal of this test is for the doctor to find out whether or not it is safe for the child to start a sports activity; that his heart and lungs are working well enough to handle high physical stress; and that his muscles, tendons, and joints are strong enough to exercise.

Medical History: What Does It Includes?

Medical history is the question that the pediatrician asks during the medical interview. The doctor will probably ask about:

Illnesses among family members

Diseases that the mother or father had in childhood, such as asthma, epilepsy, or diabetes mellitus.

Previous hospitalizations or surgeries.

Medications the child is taking

Hereditary allergies

If the child has had difficulty breathing or feels tired while playing.

Physical Examination: Is It Dangerous For My Child?

No, it is not dangerous. Children are not exposed to unnecessary stress either. The physical examination consists of the routine medical test: blood pressure measurement, visual check, measurement of height, weight and circumference, posture, and evaluation of the heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat. If it is a girl, the doctor will probably ask questions about her monthly bleeding.
